article about mission:CRITICAL in the Times-Standard

Allen has written another masterpiece,

here is the text:

Mission Critical: Dub Cowboy keeps the dance floor packed

Allen Amundsen / For the Times-Standard
Posted: 01/08/2009 10:29:18 AM PST

A recent cover story in The Economist magazine explored the timeless mystery of Why We Love Music. Neuroscientists, Evolutionary Biologists, and Linguists all seem to have different theories as to why music matters so much to billions of people on the planet. Is it an integral part of social grooming, community-building, and mating rituals? Was it just an accident of history that merely became a part of daily human activity? No one seems to know for sure.
I have no bias towards one theory over another. I do know one thing though: Music matters. It serves as vital lubricant for societies, groups, and cultures. It is certainly an important facet of everyday life in Humboldt County. Next to intense political discourse, the environment, and the visual arts, music is the pulsating spirit that keeps this slice of the world lively and entertaining.
The keepers of the sacred beat are the DJs. The local DJ culture in Humboldt County is thriving. Look no further than Dub Cowboy and Jsun, who hold court every Saturday night at Jambalaya on the Plaza. Every weekend they bring to the masses their latest project aptly named “Mission: Critical.” The name itself invokes a focused intensity whose mission statement is to set fire to the dance floor and inspire people to let loose.
At 10 p.m. the humble restaurant ceases to be a fusion-based eatery and becomes the hottest dance club in Arcata. A cavalcade of multi-media spectacle creates a luminous orb of good vibes

and a massive throng of dancers pour into to bask in its giddy glow. Dub Cowboy and Jsun use their vast musical knowledge to open up an inter-dimensional portal to Planet Dance where a mesh of Top 40, Hip-Hop, Dubstep, and Dancehall becomes the vivid soundtrack for good times.
The name “Mission: Critical” quite literally came to DJ Dub Cowboy at the last minute.
”I was about to go on the air at KRFH” he tells me as we sit at a tiny table not 10 feet away from the stage at Jambalaya. “It was about two minutes until my show and I was thinking about how important this music is. I went on the air and the name just popped into my head and I said it. The response to it was instant.”
The gig at Jambalaya started merely as a fill-in thing. However, Dub Cowboy soon found himself with a new opportunity to build a weekly experience for the community. He called in his good friend DJ Jsun (also known as Jason Soto) to help him bring “Mission: Critical” into existence.
The two intrepid beat maestros are armed with the very latest in high-tech goodies in order to bring the best sound and visual experience for the audience. Recently, Dub Cowboy figured out how to wire their two laptops together via Bluetooth so that they can swap beats and set lists in real-time in order to keep that improvisational aspect to DJing alive.
They like to play with different song sequences in order to create maximum pleasure for the crowd. Lately, Dub Cowboy has found that a combination of Estelle/Sean Paul, John Legend/Buju Banton, and a Reggae remix of Lil Wayne creates an incredible stir on the dance floor.
The mission statement of “Mission: Critical” is simple but important -- to create an irresistible tapestry of beats so that people can let loose and dance into the wee hours of the morning.
”It's a foundation for a Saturday night” Dub Cowboy tells me. “Dancing is a natural part of life--if we don't have that, everything just builds up. Dancing is medicine.”
DJ Jsun whole-heartedly agrees, adding that the ultimate point of “Mission: Critical” is “getting your work week started right.”
”People come in and just sweat” he says with a satisfied grin of a young man who has seen hundreds of faces and has successfully ushered them into a realm of feel-good vibes.
Recently, Dub Cowboy has made a few crucial contacts with artists and promoters and his E-mail in-box is constantly crammed with new information on the latest tracks.
”For instance” he says, “after Obama was elected an artist created a song called Black Man in the White House. The technology is so amazing that I can get these brand new songs almost instantly. I am able to get the MP3s and then I can DJ it the very next day.”
They have also incorporated video into the mix, a hot new addition to the DJ world that has slowly been taking off all over in clubs across the country.
”We balance the music with the message by including everybody” Dub Cowboy said. “We have a consistent crowd; as soon as the music is up, they are here until it's over. We give them an experience. It's exactly what I would want when I go into a club: The sound is just right, the mood is live. I want to give it to them.”
Is music inextricably wired into our DNA? Was it just a freak occurrence that happened tens of thousands of years ago in the misty halls of pre-history? Frankly, it doesn't matter. Biologists and Neuroscientists may bicker about where music came from but no one can argue with the fact that it means the world to a lot of people. The eternal beat is instinctual. Dancing is catharsis. DJ Dub Cowboy and DJ Jsun are scientists in their own right--splitting the atoms of infectious beats every Saturday night at Jambalaya. Go ahead and check out their ongoing experiment in the flesh.

I'm still here, good things are in the works...

Faithful Massive,

I keep starting posts and not finishing them. So, you have some words and pics to look forward to. I have not posted the 2009 KHSU Reggae Jamdowns yet because there is new artwork coming and its very sweet.

I have to catch up on some playlists too, which will happen this coming Friday.

Until then here is a little catch up:

  • The queen is due any day with the latest addition to the family. The due date is Feb 7th, and we do not know the sex yet. The excitement is pretty high. This is the biggest reason for my lack of input on this site.

  • The rest of that reason is because there is a lot going on. The Jamdown is on lock, mission:CRITICAL is taking off, and its time to jump back into the flow of being a performing DJ.

REGGAE JAMDOWN-

The "Jamdown" is the foundation of this site and it has been going through some expansion. The core is still intact. KHSU is not going anywhere, and the friday afternoon reggae show is part of a long tradition that will be hard to break; 25 years at least. The show has almost always been live and I feel like it should stay that way. I have too much fun to quit. One thing has changed over the last couple years, which has made way for some of the latest developments, and thats the format for the music being played. The MP3 now rules the music world. At first I would drag a crate of records up the three floors and mix them with the latest promo CDs. It took 2 years for me to even find the reggae section at the KHSU library, which kept me busy for a while. But now its almost all digital, from creation to distribution to playback. I use a program called Serato Scratch LIVE and a specialized mixer from Rane. This not only allows me to play almost any song instantaneously (as long as there is a good copy on the hard drive), but it also allows me to record it in a couple different ways. So now the Reggae Jamdown comes in 2 flavors....

BIGUPRADIO.COM-

Back when the Reggae Jamdown started broadcasting online via KHSU.ORG (big up to the Stream Guys), I did some research on what was going on in the world of internet reggae radio and I kept ending up on Bigupradio.com. I have been subscribing to 4-5 of their podcasts for several years. In my heart, I knew that I wanted to take what I was doing in Humboldt to that level. This last October that became reality. The REGGAE JAMDOWN has been well received at Bigupradio.com and it is truly an honor to include with the finest DJs, singers, and producers in the world of reggae and dancehall music. They get over 2,000,000 hits a month on their homepage and have several thousand listeners daily on the their 7 streaming stations. The REGGAE JAMDOWN is on the Roots station every Monday at 3am, 9am, 3pm, and 9pm, is the Eastern Standard Time Zone. Instead of going by date like it does on KHSU, each show is numbered. The Bigupradio version is re-voiced without the local underwriters, and has some unique features. For instance, today's show (#16) has a ticket giveaway for the Bob Marley Movement Caribbean Festival in MIami Florida.

Bigupradio has also help the Reggae Jamdown connect with some world class artists. Chuck Fenda, Anthony B, Collie Buddz, Linval Thompson, Perfect, Malika Madremana, Pato Banton, and Groundation have all made rounds on the show since we started broadcasting there. Just as important, are the new listeners reaching out from near and far. I don't have stats for how well we are doing there, but I can tell you that it feels real good. So, thank you massive.

mission:CRITICAL-

What is mission:CRITICAL? This is my response to a feeling that I just can't shake. For many years, I have enjoyed Reggae and Dancehall music from the comfort of our privileged country, when I know the world is still full of injustice and poverty. When I found myself in the flow of some heavy musical vibes, I felt the responsibility to do what I could. This became creating a new radio show and a series of events. mission:CRITICAL now happens every Saturday at the Jambalaya in Arcata. The mission:CRITICAL Dancehall Radio Show is 12 episodes deep and will pick back up in a few weeks. The first season came from KRFH.NET 610 AM Studios which is where I started legit radio in Humboldt. I ended that 6 and a half year run by starting this show, which will continue from my own studio which is now in the planning stages. You'll hear a lot more about that in the near future. For now, check out the vibes on the radio show and if you are in Arcata and want to come out and dance on a Saturday night come to the weekly event. Each week will be consistent in that you are getting the music you need to hear, whether its coming through a DJ or a select group of live performers. J-Sun from Deep Groove Society is my partner in the night. We will make sure you hear the latest and most crucial riddims and that they will be mixed properly and sound good in the speaker box.

DJ DUB COWBOY- Yes, I'm back.

I never really left, but almost three years ago I put the DJ gigs on the back burner and focused on school and getting a business degree. I am now done with that portion of life and its time to work full time again. I pretty much have something going on every day of the week, so lets start from the beginning.

Sundays:
I always think of Sunday as the first day of the week. For just over a year, I have been providing visual entertainment for Deep Groove Society. This consists of intelligent lights and video projections. This is kind of like a side project that has taken on a life of its own. I have been rolling with the DGS crew for almost 10 years, so this one is a labor of love and a lot of fun. I drop a set every now and then as Mixmaster Crushington.

Mondays:
Technically, this is my day off but its a big day for the Reggae Jamdown. Bigupradio.com streams the latest episode every Monday at 3am, 9am, 3pm, and 9pm on the roots station. Know about it!

Tuesdays:
I will be back at the Sidelines playing Dancehall and Hip Hop. YES! This starts Feb 3!

Wednesdays:
Every now and then I will be dropping by the Jambalaya for their established Dancehall night.

Thursdays:
Returning to my old residency at The Sideline starting in March. Itchie Fingaz has been holding this down quite well. Big respect, however I am really excited to be back there.

Fridays:
I work all day on the Reggae Jamdown then have a residency at Ragg's Rack Room in Eureka at night. I play music videos over a couple TVs, turn the volume up real loud, and throw down an epic set of Hip Hop, R&B, and Dancehall. This place can get rowdy, but I love it.

Saturdays:
mission:CRITICAL!

I also have some new mixes in the works, including the next DVD. You probably have not gotten the first one, but you will have a chance for that soon. There will be some new websites soon, and later in the year I may be coming to your town with the new band I am the manger of, Jah Sun and the Gravity Unit. More on that soon...

Until then,
Massive Respect!
